Anti Depressants: Anti depressants are a form of medication used primarily to relieve the symptoms of moderate or severe depression. Depression is a common illness characterized by feelings of sadness and hopelessness. There is a lot of confusion surrounding the illness and it can often be misunderstood, however it is a genuine mental health condition with real symptoms that requires treatment and support. The condition can affect people in a number of different ways, causing a range of symptoms, including loss of sleep and appetite, feeling anxious and losing interest in things that used to bring enjoyment. Most people experience feeling down for a couple of days at some point every now and then, however a person suffering with depression will feel persistently low for weeks or months. Treatment of depression involves either a form of therapy (such as counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy) or taking medication, or in more severe cases a combination of the two. There are almost 30 different sorts of anti depressants, of which there are four main types. SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), which are the most commonly prescribed among the four, work on the brain chemical serotonin and have the least side effects. SNRIs (Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors) are also known as atypical antidepressants. They work by targeting other neurotransmitters either in addition to serotonin or alone, for example Wellbutrin, which blocks the reabsorption of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. NASSAs (Noradrenaline and Specific Serotoninergic Antidepressants) also known as tricyclic antidepressants inhibit the brain´s norepinephrine and serotonin or reputake, as well as partially inhibiting the reabsorption of dopamine. MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are the oldest out of the four types of anti depressants and are less commonly used. The anti depressants work by altering the balance of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters, which pass signals from one brain cell to another. They mostly work on affecting a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which along with other neurotransmitters is thought to be a cause of depression. Two or more anti depressant treatments may need to be taken before finding one that is suitable and works, at which point they will usually need to be taken for at least four to six months after symptoms have begun to ease. For people who have suffered from depression for a long time, or have had previous bouts of the condition, they may need to take medication for up to five years or longer.
